Chania Sightseeing Tours welcomes you on board and wishes you a pleasant trip to the town of Chania. Each Tour takes approximately 90 minutes. We offer commentary in 10 languages. The tour traces the history & culture of Chania.
Firstly the Chania city tour starts from Akti Kanari passing in front of the two old chimneys of Avea oil refinery. This is a rare example of the first industrial buildings of the last century on the island of Crete. We reach the picturesque harbor of Nea Hora (New Country). This name was given to this area because it became the new country for the thousands of refugees, who were forced to leave their homeland at the Turkish Aegean coast, in the early 1920s.
We continue our trip passing through 1886 square and the Town’s City Hall. We reach the magnificent crossed shaped building of the Municipal Market, in the center of the town. Leaving behind us the Market Square, we are coming into the old Turkish neighborhood of Splanzia. Feel the history and the culture of the area, walking through the alleys of Hatzimichali Daliani street and admire the St Nicolas church, an old Domenican Monastery with the distinguished Minaret. Moreover you can see the Venetian Naval architecture by looking at the remains of the old Venetian Ship yards (Neoria) and the great Arsenali. Straightaway we see the Lighthouse. We also pass the Sampionara Gate, one of the four main entrances of the old Venetian town.
Additionally, passing through the Courthouse square, with Eleftherios Venizelos statue giving us a warm welcome and the magnificent St Peter’s & St Paul’s Cathedral, on the background. You refresh yourself by the Aegean aura, as we continue our trip, to the old outskirts of Chania – Halepa. Continuing our Chania city tour we pass through the old mansions of this aristocratic area, of the last century. You can admire the National Foundation of research & studies “Eleftherios Venizelos”, the old Catholic French School of Nuns and the houses of Prince George & Eleftherios Venizelos, the new Archaeological Museum and the Holy Temple of St Magdalene.
Starting our ascending to the Akrotiri Peninsula, we are passing through Prophet Elias pine little park and we finally reach Venizelos Graves. There you have a breathtaking view of the city of Chania, the Venetian Harbor and the Lighthouse, as well as a magnificent view of the White mountains.
Leaving behind us the heroes on their enteral sleep we continue our tour to Souda Bay, having panoramic views of the beautiful bay. You can visit the allied 2nd World War Cemetery, and after that we are going in to Souda Bay and the traditional Town of Souda.
Finally towards the end of Chania city tour we are coming back to the town, you can admire the Municipal Gardens, Crete’s wild goat sanctuary (Kri – Kri) and the Clock Tower. On our way back to Akti Kanari, we drive through St Salvadore Gate and the outside fortifications of the Venetian walls.
